5 Signs You Need a Website Refresh for Your Small Business (and What to Do About It)

We all know first impressions matter and in business, your website is your first impression. It’s where potential customers decide if you’re legit, if they like your vibe, and (let’s be real) if they trust you enough to stick around.

But websites aren’t “set and forget.” Just like your business evolves, your website should too. So how do you know when it’s time for a little glow-up?

Here are 5 signs your website might need a refresh and what to do about it.

Hands typing on a laptop with a plant nearby. Glasses, a notebook, a pen, and a neutral-toned sweater add to the calm workspace.

1. It Looks Outdated

If your site still looks like it was made in 2016… it probably was. And hey, no judgment here, you’ve been busy running a business! But design trends, tech, and customer expectations move fast. A modern look helps people take your business seriously from the get-go.

What to do: Consider a clean, mobile-friendly design with updated branding, fonts, and imagery that reflect where your business is at now.

2. It’s Hard to Use (Especially on Mobile)

If people have to zoom in, squint, or click five times to find what they need, they’re leaving. Fast. Your site should be easy to navigate, especially on phones (since most of us are scrolling with one thumb and a coffee in the other hand).

What to do: Test your site on your phone. If it’s clunky or confusing, it’s time to simplify. Clear navigation, clickable buttons, and readable text go a long way.

3. Your Copy Doesn’t Reflect What You Do Anymore

Maybe you’ve niched down, added new services, or just grown into your voice more. If your words still sound like “old you,” your ideal clients might be missing the message.

What to do: Update your homepage and about page to reflect what you actually offer and speak in your tone of voice. Keep it clear, conversational, and human.

4. You’re Not Showing Up in Google

If people search for your business or what you offer and you’re nowhere to be found, your website might not be working as hard as it could.

What to do: You don’t need to be an SEO expert, but some basic tweaks like updating your page titles, adding keywords, and using clear headings can help your site show up when it matters.

5. You’re Embarrassed to Share It

Let’s be honest, if you avoid sending people to your website, that’s your gut telling you it’s not doing your brand justice. And if you’ve been relying on social media to do all the heavy lifting… that’s a missed opportunity.

What to do: It might be time for a full refresh, one that makes you proud to hit “send” on your URL and gives your dream clients the confidence to work with you.

A Website Should Work for Your Business

It’s not just about looking pretty (although that helps). Your website should be doing its job, attracting the right people, answering their questions, and guiding them to take action.
